Shanahan, Mr John

Farewell to John Shanahan

"Things have been very quiet her lately; but last Wednesday there was a little stir in the neighbour-hood when it became known that Mr. Shanahan, teacher of the public schlool, was about leaving. A meeting was called in haste, for the purpose of seeing if anythling could be done in the above-named gentleman's favour before he left. Accordingly a number of the inhabitants met at the residence of Mr. Lade to take the subject into consideration.

Mr. G. C. Nash, public school teacher at Jerrawa, was voted to preside. Among those present, were Messrs. A. Paterson, Roffe, Lade, Hinds, Alchin, J, and M. Johnson; also the wives of some of the above-named persons. It was resolved that an address should be prepared, and money was subscribed on the spot to purchase a gold locket and gold pin.

These articles were presented at the Chain of Ponds school on Thursday last, in the presence of the chlildren, and a goodly number of ladies and gentlemen. Miss Kate Johnson read the address, and Master Lade presented the locket, and Master Alchin the pin. Mr. Shanahan made a long and feeling speech, stating that he had tried to do his duty, and he hoped the parents would do theirs in the future. Many of those present shed tears. The National Anthem was rendered at the conclusion".
