Obituary - Mr Thomas McAuliffe
Death has removed still another of our old and respected district pioneers, this time in the person of Mr. Thomas McAuliffe, the well known grazier of 'Elmside', Jeir, where deceased had resided up to the time of his death, which sad event occurred at 2.30 a.m. on Saturday last.
The deceased, who had for many years acted in the capacity of postmaster at Jeir, was a native of Parramatta district, but in his youth came to live at Jeir, where he married Miss O'Sullivan, then not long out from the old country. Some years ago Mr. McAuliffe met with an accident which necessitated a long stay in the Yass Hospital, and not long after resultant troubles intervened, ultimately causing his death at the age of 79 years.
Deceased was an enthusiastic supporter of all branches of sport and also took a keen interest in political matters. He leaves a widow and family of five. Messrs. Thomas, Desmond, and Jack McAuliffe (the latter of the Defence Department, Sydney) are sons, and Misses Mary and Zita McAuliffe, daughters. All with the exception of Jack, reside at 'Elmside'.
Two sisters also survive---Mrs. Callaghan (North Yass) and Mrs. Sparrow (Bungendore). The late Mr. McAuliffe was widely esteemed and respected. The body was brought to St. Augustine's Church, Yass, where on Sunday a Mass was said. There was a very large attendance at the funeral on Sunday afternoon. The service at the grave was conducted by the Rev. Father Leonard. Mr. McIntosh was the undertaker. Very general sympathy is felt for the bereaved family and relatives. [The late Mr. McAuliffe was an uncle of the Misses Lee of Crawford Street, Queanbeyan.]
