School Museum of 'National Significance'

22 August 2014

The Hall School Museum has recently been assessed as being of national significance. The assessment was conducted by Emeritus Professor Eddie Braggett after the Museum won funding from the Community Heritage Grants program of the National Library of Australia. Professor Braggett is a Board member of the Australian National Museum of Education and author of a number of books on education.

In his report Prof. Braggett stated that the Museum's significance derived from a combination of the original school building, its unique collection of educational material pertaining to the Hall School, the school site, its connection with the village and local families.

To quote Prof. Braggett: "as a result of a protracted investigation, it is concluded that the total museum is of enduring significance, first as an entity in its own right and second as an integral part of the social, cultural and educational heritage of the Village of Hall itself."

The report is extensive, and thorough, constituting by far the most complete description and analysis of the School Museum that we have. It was based on a thorough examination of the collection, extensive interviews throughout the Hall community, and a very sound appreciation of the broader context of early Austalian schooling. The report is replete with good quality images. When published the report is expected to be of exceptional value as an authoritative independent assessment of the value of our School Museum and associated collections. We are very grateful to Professor Braggett for his good work.
