McLaughlin, Mr Ernest

Ernest McLaughin was born in 1886, which means that he was twenty-one when he was 'instructed to act as teacher on probation' at Shannons Flat Provisional school in September 1907. His remuneration was £96 per annum. His probation was evidently successful, as he stayed at Shannons Flat for nearly five years before handing over the position to Frank Daly.

Ernest's next appointment was to Wargeila school, on the road north from Yass towards Rye Park. He taught at Wargeila until November 1913 when he was appointed to Botany. Progression as a teacher followed with appointments to Darlinghurst, Bathurst, Grafton, Kurri Kurri, Paddington, Granville, Lidcombe, Auburn Eastwood and Hornsby. Along the say he got married in January 1917, and his salary increased steadily from £156 when he left Wargeila to £452 at Eastwood. He had become a Grade I teacher in 1924. He retired in 1950 after 43 years with the Education Department.
