Carpenter, Mr George

Carpenter was the first teacher appointed to the Toual school in 1888, and subsequently taught at Jeir (1896-99) and Colinton (1899- 1902). He was removed from Colinton to Barnes Creek in January 1902. His claim for travel expenses was:

1. Colinton to Queanbeyan (Rail) single - 5/6d
Two meals and bed (Queanbeyan) 3/-

2. 11 January Coach from Queanbeyan to Tharwa - 6/-
Dinner 1/-

3. 11th January - To hire of conveyance from Tharwa to Barnes Creek (7 Miles) 4/6d
TOTAL £1-0-0

The school closed two months later, there being only 10 pupils on the roll, four of whom lived 5 miles away and were 'irregular'. Three others were expected to leave the district within three weeks.

Carpenter subsequently taught at New Line East (1902-06) and Lower Boro (1906-07)
